Female genital mutilation in the picture, or rather not?

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons (WHO, 2008).
In public debates stereotypical images often arise, which are accompanied by numerous misconceptions. People do not know what it entails, what the causes/consequences are, why/where it happens, etc. This subject matter longs for more attention and awareness among a wider audience.
This project has been realised in association with my bachelor’s thesis for Graphic & Digital Media, Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool in Antwerp, with a specialisation in Graphic Media Technology; which is all in collaboration with the University of Antwerp. The aim is to make it clear that FGM is a varied and context-specific practice that requires a tailored approach.
